Latrobe Magnesium (LMG) is at the forefront of sustainable magnesium production, pioneering innovative processes that extract magnesium from waste resources. By reducing carbon emissions and fostering a circular economy, we are transforming the way magnesium is produced.
LMG's ambitious three-stage project pathway is designed to scale our operations and meet growing global demand:
Located in Hazelwood North, our 1,000 TPA Demonstration Plant utilises fly ash to produce magnesium oxide (MgO). This facility has been a significant step forward in showcasing our technology and capabilities., with more development to be completed to produce magnesium metal.
Building on our success, we are moving to Stage 2 — a 10,000 TPA commercial plant in the Latrobe Valley, again utilising fly ash. This plant will expand our production capacity and further solidify our position in the market.
Our vision culminates in Stage 3 — a 100,000 TPA mega-plant in Sarawak State, Malaysia, which will leverage ferro-nickel slag. This international expansion will not only increase our output but also contribute to another local economy and job market.
As Latrobe Magnesium grows, we are excited to create new employment opportunities and contribute to the economic development of the region. During the construction and commissioning of our Demonstration Plant, we indirectly hired over 110 people, and we are currently seeking 30 more team members for our operations. Additionally, our team will play a crucial role in training local staff at our future mega-plant in Malaysia.
We are thrilled to announce that we are nearing the start of operations for magnesium oxide at our Demonstration Plant. A heartfelt thank you goes out to our dedicated construction team and contractors. We have successfully completed all construction and commissioning upgrades, positioning us for 24/7 operations.
The future is indeed bright for magnesium! According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), the magnesium market is projected to grow by 100-200% in the next 5-10 years, driven by the increasing demand for lightweight materials in electric vehicles.
Latrobe Magnesium’s projects not only meet this critical demand but also provide an environmentally sustainable option for the magnesium industry.
